for mezzo-soprano and piano (2009)
duration ca 5'30"
**Highly Commeneded in the 2009 Jerome Hynes Composition Competition**
This short work sets the text of Brendan Kennelly’s poem Blackbird using many musical devices found in Irish music, particularly those of the sean-nós (old style) vocal tradition. Modal frameworks (including modal ambiguity or bi-modality), complex ornamentation patterns and simple structural devices combine in creating a bridge between the traditional and contemporary idioms.
